Codependency
Codependecy is the experience of feeling extreme amounts of dependence on certain loved ones in your life, and feeling responsible for the feelings and actions of those loved ones. In these relationships, the dynamic is unbalanced and often paired with unhealthy behaviors. While there are many ways to describe and define codependency, generally speaking, someone who is in a codependent in a relationship has a difficult time allowing the other person in the relationship to fail in some way. Melody Beattie wrote in “The New Codependency” that “codependency is normal behavior PLUS. There are times we do too much, care too much, feel too little, or overly engage” (Beattie, 10).
Psychotherapy can help support you as you navigate your own codependency, or that of others in your life. You’ll explore boundary setting, caretaking, communication, control, denial, chemical dependency, dependency and many other areas to help change the course of the relationship.
